Santiago Apóstol Church

The Santiago Apóstol Church is located in the Plaza Viera and Clavijo in the municipality of Los Realejos in the north of the Tenerife island.

The Santiago Apóstol Church has been declared Historic National Monument since 1983. This church is located on the site where the guanches were incorporated by the Castile Crown after the surrender of Alfonso Fernández de Lugo in 1496. This was the first christian temple on this island.

Originally, this church had only one simple building covered by a straw roof.

Nowadays, this is a three naves temple, one of which was done by Juan Benítez during the first years of the XVII century. It’s bigger chapel dates back to 1667 while the main building and naves were only finished in 1730. Its tower was raised in 1770 over which is located the actual belfry.

Its roofs were made from Tigaigan wood. The widder chapel has an octogonal shape.
One of the most important historic facts from this church it was the baptism, in 1731, of the famous historian Don José Viera y Clavijo.

In its interior you might see some valuable artistic pieces, among which we should highlight the Santa Bárbara altarpiece, a wooden coloured altarpiece from the XVIII century, the Santiago triptych, several goldsmithing pieces among which the La Cruz de Filigrana from 1677 as well as a great diversity of altarpieces such as the el Nazareno, the La Misericordia and the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.
